Mexico was once owned by Spain. On September 16, 1810 Miguel Hidalgo proclaimed independence from Spain. The declaration of Independence, "Viva Mexico!" is known as "Grito de Dolores" in Mexico. In 1821 there was a treaty that recognized Mexico as a constitutional monarchy. Unfortunately the monarchy failed, however, a republic was formed in December of 1822 and established in 1824.
